An Introduction

The Ely and Caerau Children’s Centre (ECCC) is Cardiff’s first Integrated Children’s Centre and has been open and operational for families since June 2005. The ECCC was built with the aims to improve health, education and the emotional development of young children and families through an integrated approach and serves those living in the local communities of Ely and Caerau.

The Early Years Education provision at Vachell Road Nursery and other existing services offered by a variety of agencies were transferred to the ECCC. Others such as the Welsh Medium Nursery were included in response to needs identified through consultation with the local community.

The centre is purpose built and has a variety of services including a Welsh and English medium nursery, daycare facilities, a community room, an office area for partner groups, meeting rooms, a large multi–purpose hall, kitchen, the reception area and adjoins the classrooms from the Community Education Team. It cost £1.8 million to build and resource which was jointly funded through the Big Lottery, Welsh Assembly Government and Cardiff Council.

Over the last two years the ECCC has supported families from the two Communities First areas of Ely and Caerau. Families from these areas are welcome to attend any session that run at the centre. Families from outside these areas may access if they attend a course at the Adult Education Centre (on site) or are referred to us by a partner agency such as Health or Children’s services.
